German elections, first exit polls: Cdu-Csu close to 30%, Afd second party
The partial results of the German elections on 23 February 2025, see the Cdu-Csu bloc in the lead, but the Afd in strong growth
With a very high turnout of 84%, the first exit polls released by broadcaster Ard indicate a strong contest. The Cdu-Csu bloc reached 29%, followed by the Afd at 19.5%, while the Spd stopped at 16% and the Greens at 13.5%. The Zdf results, however, show slight differences, with Cdu-Csu at 28.5%, Afd at 20% and Spd at 16.5%.
According to Ard’s analysis, Cdu-Csu and Spd together would gain 327 seats, exceeding the 316 needed to obtain a majority in the Bundestag. The Afd wins 142 seats and celebrates a ‘historic victory’, with party co-leader Alice Weidel saying she is ready to help form the new government. The Greens will come 98 seats, while the Linke comes in at 62. The Liberal Party and the Bsw do not exceed 5% and are excluded from the Bundestag.
