At first one person was reported dead, later not confirmed by the police. The driver of the car was a young Afghan asylum seeker who was stopped by the police

Munich, 13 February 2025 – It was a dramatic morning in Munich today, where a man deliberately ran over a group of demonstrators during a protest organised by the service union, the Greens. At the moment, local authorities confirm at least 28 injured, some of whom are in serious condition, including children. There are, however, no official reports of any deaths.

The young man, a 24-year-old Afghan, was detained immediately after the accident. The police confirmed that the man, an asylum seeker, was already known to the police for previous incidents of theft and possession of drugs. After running over the crowd, the 24-year-old was arrested by the police, who had to use gunfire to stop him. He is now in hospital for treatment.

The investigation is leaning towards the hypothesis of a premeditated attack, although the police do not rule out other leads. The president of Bavaria, Markus Söder, commented on the incident and called it an ‘attack’, lamenting an escalation of similar violence in the country.

The demonstration, which was taking place at the intersection of Dachauer and Seidlstrasse, was stopped immediately after the incident, while the site was quickly secured by the police. Several ambulances were on the scene to help the victims.

German police continue to collect witness statements and monitor the situation, while the authorities appeal for calm. Further updates are expected in the coming hours.
