Israel-Hamas truce and hostage release: 737 Palestinian detainees to be freed in first phase

After a meeting lasting more than five hours, the Israeli government approved the ceasefire agreement with Hamas, marking a crucial step for the truce in the Gaza Strip. The decision, formalised overnight, was confirmed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.
The agreement also provides for the release of 737 Palestinian detainees in exchange for the first Israeli hostages in the hands of Hamas, a key aspect of the first phase of the understanding.
Internal divisions
Despite the green light, the vote showed deep divisions within the government. The security cabinet had approved the deal despite the opposition of prominent figures such as National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who expressed strong misgivings about the agreement.
According to the Israeli media, 24 ministers voted in favour, while eight opposed, including members of the Otzma Yehudit and Religious Zionism parties and a Likud member.
International guarantees
During the discussions, Netanyahu reiterated that he had obtained the support of US Presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump, emphasising that Israel will retain the option to resume military operations if the agreement falters in its second phase.
Netanyahu reassured the government and Israeli citizens that state security remains a top priority.
Release of detainees
The Ministry of Justice confirmed that 737 Palestinian detainees will be released in the first phase. This measure is a tangible sign of commitment to the ceasefire, although it remains a sensitive issue for the Israeli public.
The cautiously welcomed agreement marks an important step towards detente, but its future remains uncertain, with tensions continuing to influence the regional picture.
