Meta extends fact-checking outside the US: responses to Brazilian authorities

Meta will maintain fact-checking on Facebook and Instagram outside the US, despite recent tests of the Community Ratings programme

Meta has announced that its fact-checking programme, which monitors the spread of false information on social platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, will not be suspended in countries outside the US until testing of the changes is completed. The decision comes in response to a 72-hour ultimatum imposed by the Brazilian authorities, who had requested clarification on news monitoring policies ahead of the upcoming elections.

In an official statement, Meta explained that the suspension of the fact-checking programme will only take place in the United States, where the company is testing and refining the new programme called Community Ratings, before extending it to other countries.

The company’s intention is to evaluate the effectiveness of the new community-based content-checking system, which could replace the current fact-checking approach in collaboration with external entities.
