Israel: two Palestinians killed in Jenin after surrendering
Israel launches investigation into police after killing of suspects in Jenin
Two Palestinians were killed in Jenin, in the West Bank, by Israeli border police last Thursday. According to CCTV footage, the two had left a building with their hands up, but were still shot by officers, an incident that immediately raised questions about the conduct of the security forces.
Palestinians killed in Jenin: internal investigation into officers
After the footage was released, the Israeli Ministry of Justice’s Department of Internal Police Investigations opened a criminal investigation into the three officers involved. The investigation aims to clarify the circumstances of the killing of the suspects in Jenin and to verify any violations of operational procedures.
Who were the victims
The people killed were identified by Palestinian media as Mahmoud Qassem Abdallah, 26, and Youssef Asasa, 37. Both were wanted by Israel for alleged links to attacks and shootings against troops. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that the two were part of a terrorist network based in Jenin.
Confirmation from Islamic Jihad
The Palestinian group Islamic Jihad confirmed that the victims were members of its military wing. The Al-Quds Brigades described Asasa as a “field commander” and Abdallah as a “fighter” in the local cell, emphasising their role in operations in the area.
Tension rises in the West Bank
The incident has fuelled new tensions in Jenin and more generally in the West Bank. The killing of suspects in Jenin puts pressure on Israel and the security forces, while international observers closely follow developments in the investigation and possible repercussions in the region.
