A The New York Times investigation reveals how Mossad and IDF exploited bodyguards’ phones to locate and attack nuclear programme leaders and scientists

The strategic flaw – Despite the precautions taken by the Iranian leadership – never use mobile phones and increase the number of bodyguards – Israeli agents discovered an unexpected flaw: the guards continued to use their phones and post on social media, revealing the leaders’ movements and meetings.

The decisive blow – Thanks to this information, Mossad provided the IDF with accurate data, enabling it to strike numerous targets in a single day. The operation almost decapitated the Iranian leadership: on 16 June, the Supreme National Security Council had met in an underground bunker, where only a few, such as President Masoud Pezeshkian, survived.

Lessons for Tehran – The investigation highlights how the personal security of Iranian leaders was compromised by the use of mobile phones by bodyguards, while official agencies were slow to understand the risk. The episode demonstrates the vulnerability of structures considered inviolable, even in high-security contexts.
