The US president attacks Cif and Governor Newsom for allowing a transgender student to participate in women’s competitions. The Hernandez case inflames the national debate
US President Donald Trump is once again lashing out against the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports competitions. In a post on Truth Social, he harshly criticised California Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Interscholastic Federation (Cif), accusing them of ‘illegally allowing men to compete in women’s sports’.
In Trump’s crosshairs is AB Hernandez, a transgender student at Jurupa Valley High School who, last Saturday, won both the long jump and the triple jump during qualifying for the California championships, gaining access to the state finals.
‘A male athlete in transition won it all. As a male he was mediocre, as a female he is unbeatable,’ Trump wrote, calling the episode “humiliating for women and girls”. The president announced that he would personally contact Newsom, who reportedly merely called the case ‘unfair’, and threatened to block federal funding to California on a large scale if his executive order banning biologically male athletes from competing in women’s competitions is not complied with.
The president also ordered local authorities to prevent AB Hernandez from participating in the finals. According to Fox News, the young athlete won the triple jump with a measurement of 12.31 metres and the long jump with 5.88 metres. The podium was marked by protests: one of the opponents did not show up at the awards ceremony and several parents questioned the fairness of the competition.
Cif, for its part, followed California law and its own gender identity guidelines. However, it is now under investigation by the US Department of Education. Julie Hartman, spokesperson for the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), said: ‘We will not allow women’s civil rights to be trampled upon. The investigation continues with vigour’.
The case reignites a deeply divisive debate in the US between LGBTQ+ rights and the protection of women’s sports competitions.
