Tragedy in San Diego, California, on the morning of Thursday, 22 May. A Cessna 550 private plane crashed into a military housing development in Murphy Canyon, killing several people on board and triggering a huge fire that destroyed an entire city block.

The aircraft was en route to the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport, but shortly before landing it lost altitude and crashed violently into homes. According to Dan Eddy, assistant chief of the San Diego Fire Department, the crash caused a huge debris field and the involvement of several buildings.

Local authorities ordered an immediate evacuation of the area due to the risk of secondary fires and fuel spills. Pictures released show gutted houses, charred cars and thick smoke rising from the affected neighbourhood.

Rescue workers are still working in the rubble to ascertain the exact number of victims and to trace the driver and any passengers. At the moment, there are no casualties or serious injuries among residents.

Federal investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash.
