Martin Scorsese will sign a documentary on Pope Francis: ‘Aldeas – A New Story’.

The US director has announced a documentary film focusing on conversations with Bergoglio and the educational experience of the Scholas Occurrentes foundation

Martin Scorsese has announced the making of a documentary film about Pope Francis, entitled Aldeas – A New Story. At the centre of the project is a series of conversations with the Pontiff, which the director called his last television interview. It was reported by the Guardian, explaining that the film will focus on the work of the international foundation Scholas Occurrentes, created by Francis in 2013 to promote a ‘culture of encounter’ among young people.

Produced by Aldeas Scholas Film and Scorsese’s own Sikelia Productions, the documentary is presented as a testimony to the belief that creativity represents not only a means of expression, but also a tool for hope and transformation.

In one of his last public statements before his death on 21 April, Pope Francis had described the Aldeas project as ‘extremely poetic and very constructive, because it goes to the roots of human life, sociability, conflict… the essence of the human journey’.

‘Today more than ever we need to talk to each other, to listen to each other interculturally,’ Scorsese said. ‘One of the best ways to do this is to share the stories of who we are, reflected from our personal lives and experiences. This helps us understand and value how everyone sees the world. For Pope Francis it was essential that people from all over the world could exchange ideas in mutual respect, while maintaining their cultural identity. And cinema is the best medium to do this’.
