Bayrou accuses Trump: ‘His support for Le Pen is an interference’
The French premier criticizes the US president’s statements and curbs protests over the Rassemblement National leader’s conviction
French Premier François Bayrou does not mince words and calls Donald Trump’s expressed support for Marine Le Pen “an interference.” In an interview with Le Parisien newspaper, Bayrou strongly condemned the words of the U.S. president, who in recent days had expressed solidarity with the Rassemblement National leader after her conviction in court.
Criticism of Trump: ‘Not acceptable’
According to Bayrou, Trump’s remarks represent undue interference in France’s internal affairs. “It is neither normal nor acceptable for a foreign leader to intervene in a political and judicial process affecting another country,” the premier said. The reference is to Trump’s words in a TV interview, in which he had called Marine Le Pen’s conviction “unjust.”
