As Russia increases military pressure, Trump’s move to halt aid to Kiev risks further weakening Ukraine, which has been hit by a growing offensive
At a crucial moment in the war, when Ukraine is under intense military pressure from Russia, Donald Trump has decided to temporarily suspend the delivery of vital military aid to Kiev. As Russian attacks intensify, the White House’s choice risks bringing Ukraine to its knees, at a stage when every day of resistance counts.
According to reports in the New York Times and CNN, Trump took this decision after a heated confrontation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office, during which the American leader clarified his vision: to put peace at any cost at the centre. A position that, translated into action, has led to the halting of over a billion dollars in arms and ammunition, crucial for Kiev, just as Russia is increasing its bombing.
A peace ‘imposed’ at the expense of Ukraine
The official White House narrative speaks of a ‘pause’ aimed at facilitating peace negotiations. A senior official stated that ‘the President is focused on peace’ and that the goal is to review aid to ensure that it contributes to a peaceful solution. However, this suspension comes at the worst possible time for Ukraine, which is struggling to repel the Russian advance. Russia has not only made no sign of abating its attacks, but, on the contrary, has intensified its offensive in recent weeks.
The suspension of aid, which also includes weapons that have already arrived in Poland, risks being a sign of weakness and abandonment. With this decision, Trump seems oblivious to the daily difficulties of a people under siege, and his insistence on forcing Zelensky to negotiate with Russia could result in disastrous concessions for Ukraine.
JD Vance: Criticism of Zelensky, but Russia won’t give up anything
Further complicating the picture are the words of Vice-President JD Vance, who in an interview with Fox News accused Zelensky of not engaging enough in peace negotiations. According to Vance, ‘the door is open, but only if Zelensky is willing to talk seriously about peace’. However, what Vance seems to ignore is that every day of war means more loss and suffering for the Ukrainian people, while Russia continues to take no steps backwards.
While Ukraine is being asked to ‘give something up’ in order to reach an agreement, Russia has not been asked to give anything up. Trump and his administration seem to want to impose a peace that could condemn Ukraine to losing much of its territory and sovereignty. But how can Kiev negotiate when missiles continue to rain down on cities and Russian troops are advancing?
A decision that puts the entire European front at risk
The suspension of military aid does not only affect Ukraine, but also the security of the whole of Europe. The war in Ukraine is not only a regional issue, but a confrontation with far-reaching geopolitical implications. Europe, already under pressure, risks finding itself isolated in a conflict that could escalate even more dangerously. Trump’s decision seems to ignore this complex picture, jeopardising international stability.
If Trump’s goal is indeed peace, suspending military aid at this critical moment could achieve the opposite effect. Weakening Ukraine while Russia continues to advance means handing Moscow a strategic advantage, all without obtaining any real guarantee of peace negotiations.
This decision risks marking a negative turning point in the war, leaving Ukraine vulnerable and weakening US credibility as a reliable ally. While Zelensky is urged to negotiate, the price the Ukrainian people may be forced to pay is likely to be very high.
