Israeli raid on hospital in Gaza: senior Hamas official eliminated
Israeli airstrike hits Nasser hospital compound in Khan Yunis, killing Hamas figure Ismail Barhoum. Civilian casualties
The Gaza Civil Defence Agency reported that Israeli Air Force jets hit the emergency room of the Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, in the south of the Gaza Strip. ‘The occupation planes targeted the emergency room of the Nasser hospital with an airstrike,’ the agency said without giving immediate details of the casualties.
The IDF (Israel Defence Forces) confirmed the raid, saying it had ‘accurately’ hit a senior Hamas operative inside the facility. ‘The attack was conducted after an extensive intelligence gathering process and with precise munitions to minimise damage,’ the IDF said, accusing Hamas of using civilian infrastructure and putting the population at risk.
Meanwhile, according to Al Jazeera, at least five Palestinians were killed and others injured in the shelling. The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that the raid hit the second floor of the hospital complex, causing fire and casualties among the citizens.
Senior Hamas official Ismail Barhoum was ‘successfully eliminated’ in the raid, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said. Barhoum, a member of the Hamas political bureau and involved in the group’s financial activities, had taken over as the new Hamas premier in Gaza after the elimination of Issam Da’alis.
Hamas has not yet issued an official statement, but al-Aqsa News, the group’s affiliated broadcaster, confirmed Barhoum’s death in the raid.
