“Crypto-gate” scandal: Javier Milei under fire, calls for impeachment
Argentine President Javier Milei is accused of promoting the cryptocurrency $LIBRA, causing severe financial losses
Argentine President Javier Milei is at the center of a scandal, dubbed “Crypto-gate,” related to the promotion of the cryptocurrency $LIBRA. The opposition, led by Socialist Congressman Esteban Paulón, has filed a call for impeachment after the cryptocurrency, promoted by Milei on social media, plummeted in value soon after its launch, causing huge losses to investors.
The complaint involves more than 40,000 people and losses in excess of $4 billion, with allegations of fraud, fraud and breach of public official duties. Former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has also harshly criticized Milei, calling him a “cryptocurrency scammer.”
Although Milei denies any wrongdoing, saying he acted in good faith and did not fully understand the operation, more than 112 lawsuits have been filed against him. Also among the suspects are several businessmen and public figures, including Julián Peh, CEO of Kip Network Inc, and Martín Menem, president of the Chamber of Deputies.
The case is being handled by Federal Judge María Servini, while the opposition and other political forces are calling for legal action and a thorough investigation.
