Senior official Mousa Abu Marzouk praises new US president for role in ending Gaza conflict

Hamas’ political leadership says it is ready for dialogue with the US, crediting President Donald Trump with “ending” the war in the Gaza Strip. This was stated by Mousa Abu Marzouk, a senior Hamas official, in an interview with the New York Times.

‘Had it not been for President Trump, his insistence on ending the war and sending a decisive representative, the agreement would never have materialised,’ Abu Marzouk said, referring to the US envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.

The official added that Witkoff would be welcome in Gaza, expressing the hope that the US representative would be able to ‘understand the feelings and wishes of the people’ in order to foster a balanced US position.

However, President Trump expressed doubts about whether the ceasefire would hold. ‘It’s not our war, it’s their war. But I have no confidence’ in the agreement, he said, adding that Hamas has emerged “weakened” from the conflict.

Trump also evoked a ‘fantastic plan’ for the reconstruction of Gaza, emphasising its potential: ‘Gaza is in a phenomenal location on the sea, the climate is fantastic. Wonderful things can be done in this place’.

The ceasefire reached between Israel and Hamas is a significant step, but the challenges for lasting peace in the region remain numerous.
