Ceasefire agreement in Gaza, the understanding between Israel and Hamas is reached

Ceasefire agreement in Gaza, the understanding between Israel and Hamas is reached

After weeks of negotiations, the knot between Israel and Hamas has been resolved. The ceasefire and the release of hostages will start on Sunday 19 January

The agreement between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages has finally been reached, resolving all outstanding issues. According to a US source, quoted by Axios journalist Barak Ravid on X, the agreement is now official. An Israeli official also confirmed that the Israeli security cabinet will meet tomorrow to formally approve the understanding.

The Israeli government had initially planned to validate the agreement today, but Prime Minister Netanyahu had accused Hamas of attempting to retract the final details, particularly regarding the list of Palestinian prisoners to be released. This had caused a brief stalemate.

In the meantime, efforts are being made to speed up the implementation of the truce, with mediators doing their utmost to bring the ceasefire into effect as early as tomorrow afternoon, as reported by Saudi Asharq television. The aim is to avoid further escalation, following the intensification of Israeli shelling on the Gaza Strip in recent hours.

The understanding, involving mediators from Qatar, Egypt and the United States, envisages that the first phase of the ceasefire will begin on Sunday 19 January. However, despite the announcement of the agreement, Gaza authorities and residents have reported an intensification of Israeli attacks, with dozens of casualties.

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, expressed confidence in the implementation of the agreement, confirming that the ceasefire should come into effect as planned on Sunday.
