California wildfires still out of control: dangerous winds up to 100 km/h
New weather alerts for Los Angeles and Ventura, over 6 million people at risk
The battle against wildfires in California rages on, with the situation remaining “extremely dangerous” due to the strong winds forecast for today, 15 January. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued new weather alerts for areas of Los Angeles and Ventura, placing over 6 million people at risk. Although the winds will not be as intense as last week, gusts could exceed 100 km/h at higher elevations, increasing the likelihood of new uncontrollable fires.
Weather conditions are expected to improve tomorrow, with winds beginning to subside and cooler, more humid air moving into southern California. Meanwhile, authorities are assessing the damage caused by the wildfires that have ravaged large areas of Pacific Palisades and Altadena. The current death toll stands at at least 25, with 37 people still missing, and over 12,000 homes, businesses, and other structures have been destroyed.
Firefighters have been working tirelessly to extinguish small blazes before they spread and continue to build containment lines around the Palisades and Eaton fires to prevent further expansion. These wildfires are expected to become the most expensive in U.S. history.
