The fall of Bashar al Assad: end of a decades-long dictatorship VIDEO
Opposition forces take Damascus and close a chapter of civil war and oppression
The regime of Bashar al Assad has officially collapsed, marking the end of a decades-long era of family control over Syria. After years of bloody civil war and a week of rapid advances by opposition forces, Damascus is now under their control. The fall of the regime was characterised by a surprising absence of armed resistance in the final stages.
Despite initial promises of political, economic and human rights reforms, Bashar al Assad’s tenure has been marred by widespread violence and repression, leading the United Nations to name him responsible for some of the worst human rights violations of the 21st century. Under his rule, the country was the scene of massacres, systematic use of torture and large-scale destruction.
The fall of Assad does not only mark a political change, but represents a bitter page in Syrian history. The Assad family dominated the country for over 50 years, starting with the 1970 coup that brought Hafez al Assad, Bashar’s father, to power. Their legacy has been that of an authoritarian regime supported by a network of patronage, coupled with a brutal repression of all forms of dissent.
A detailed analysis of the history of the Assad regime and their impact on Syria was recently presented by TRT World through a video documentary. This visual narrative explores the complex web of alliances and the consequences of decades of dictatorship on the Syrian population, contributing to an understanding of the rise and fall of family power in the region.
