The leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Özgür Özel, called a large demonstration in Istanbul on Saturday in support of the city’s detained mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. Özel harangued the crowd during a protest held for the seventh consecutive evening in front of Istanbul City Hall, calling for Imamoglu’s immediate release and early elections. “Will you be at the big rally on Saturday to support Ekrem Imamoglu, to oppose his detention and say we want early elections?” said Özel, galvanising the protesters against political repression and for a change in the country’s leadership.
