Twist in Maradona death trial: bodyguard arrested for perjury
The San Isidro court has ordered the arrest of Julio Coria, Diego Maradona’s bodyguard, for lying about his relationship with neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, the main defendant in the trial
During the ongoing trial in San Isidro for the death of Diego Armando Maradona, the court ordered the immediate arrest of Julio Coria, one of the Argentine champion’s bodyguards. Prosecutor Patricio Ferrari accused Coria of perjury, claiming that the man was lying about his lack of ties to neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, the main defendant for murder.
Coria’s testimony was contradicted by numerous chats presented by the prosecution, which showed contacts between the bodyguard and the doctor. The trial judges – Maximiliano Savarino, Verónica Di Tommaso and Julieta Makintach – approved the arrest request.
In addition to Luque, the trial involves six other members of the medical team responsible for Maradona’s treatment after the operation for a brain haematoma. Initial hearings have revealed possible negligence in the management of the health of the champion, football icon and Napoli.
