New Taliban ban in Afghanistan, requiring women not to look out of windows. The decree aims to prevent ‘obscene acts’ and provides for walling up windows in existing buildings

In Afghanistan, the Taliban have issued a new decree banning women from looking out of windows, with the stated aim of preventing ‘obscene acts’. According to Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, any viewing of places such as the kitchen, bathroom or toilet door is considered ‘dangerous’. New buildings will not be required to have windows facing these spaces, while for existing ones, windows facing places frequented by women will have to be bricked up. The municipality is in charge of enforcing these new regulations.

This is just the latest in a series of repressive decrees that have severely restricted women’s rights since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. Among other recently imposed restrictions, women can no longer hear the voices of other women praying, considering that the female voice is defined as ‘awrah’, i.e. something that must be hidden.

The Taliban’s policies have caused international concern, with the UN pointing out that these measures have excluded women from public and professional life in the country. Organisations and activists such as Asila Wardak of the Women’s Forum on Afghanistan insist on the need to include women in discussions about the country’s future, stating that the exclusion of women is not a solution for Afghanistan.
