Israel begins first phase of occupation of Gaza City

The spokesperson for the Israeli Defence Forces confirms the start of ground operations: troops have already taken control of the outskirts of the city.

The Israeli army has launched the first phase of its ground invasion of Gaza City. This was announced by Brigadier General Effie Defrin, spokesperson for the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), confirming that troops have begun preliminary operations and are already on the outskirts of the city.

The advance towards the centre

According to reports, Israeli forces are consolidating their control of the outer neighbourhoods before moving on to the central areas. The announcement marks a further step in the military operation launched by Tel Aviv against Hamas, after weeks of bombing and clashes in the Gaza Strip.

The context of the conflict

The offensive comes amid growing tensions between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement. The decision to launch a ground occupation of Gaza City represents a turning point in the military operation, with the risk of escalation on the humanitarian and political fronts.
