Trump threatens to arrest New York mayoral candidate Mamdani
The president attacks Zohran Mamdani: ‘If he obstructs federal agents, he will be arrested.’ And accuses him of communism
US President Donald Trump has publicly threatened to arrest Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic member of the New York State Assembly and candidate for mayor of the city. Trump’s words come in response to statements made by the 33-year-old, who has repeatedly expressed his willingness to oppose the operations of federal immigration agents.
The president’s statement: “We will arrest him”
During a speech, Trump said: “If Mamdani wins the election and obstructs the work of immigration agents, then we will have to arrest him”. These words immediately sparked reactions in the US political arena, especially among Democrats and civil rights supporters.
Ideological accusation: ‘We don’t want communists in this country’
The president added fuel to the fire by calling Mamdani ‘a communist,’ adding, ‘We don’t need a communist in this country.’ Zohran Mamdani, of Ugandan and Indian origin, is one of the emerging faces of the American progressive left and is known for his pro-immigrant rights and justice reform positions.
Tension over immigration and local powers
Trump’s words are part of a broader debate on the role of sanctuary cities and the autonomy of local authorities in interacting or not with federal immigration agencies. Mamdani has repeatedly criticised the current administration’s immigration policies, calling them ‘inhumane’.
