Trump considers extending EU tariffs: new proposal delivered to Brussels
The White House opens up to the possibility of postponing the tariff increase scheduled for 9 July. Von der Leyen: American counterproposal received
President Donald Trump’s administration is considering extending the 9 July deadline for the entry into force of new, higher tariffs on a wide range of products imported from dozens of countries, including members of the European Union. This was stated by White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, who emphasised that the date is not considered essential for achieving the administration’s objectives. ‘It could be extended, but that is a decision for the president,’ she said.
According to Politico, citing two European diplomats, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told EU leaders that she had received the latest counterproposal from Washington today. The communication took place during the European Council meeting in Brussels, where the common position to be adopted in negotiations with the United States is also being discussed.
The European Union and the United States have been negotiating for months in an attempt to avoid the permanent imposition of tariffs on European goods, a measure that could have a significant impact on transatlantic trade.
Meanwhile, Trump has announced the signing of a new trade agreement between the United States and China and has hinted that India could be “next” on the list of bilateral agreements. The president made these statements during an event at the White House dedicated to promoting a public spending bill.
