Update at 11.30 p.m. – The 11 p.m. projections overturn the exit polls: Nawrocki, supported by the PiS, obtains 50.7% of the votes against 49.3% for Warsaw mayor Trzaskowski, the Civic Platform candidate.

In the Polish presidential elections, initial projections at 11 p.m. indicate a lead for Karol Nawrocki, the sovereignist candidate supported by PiS, who has won 50.7% of the vote. Slightly behind is the mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Trzaskowski, 53, candidate of Civic Platform, the party led by Donald Tusk, with 49.3%.

This figure differs from the preliminary exit polls, which gave Trzaskowski a slight lead, signalling a reversal in voting intentions confirmed by the first official projections.

10,00 p.m. – The Civic Platform candidate urges caution while awaiting official results. His sovereignist opponent, backed by the PiS, claims victory and promises to ‘save Poland’

It was the mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Trzaskowski, 53, candidate of Civic Platform – the party of current Prime Minister Donald Tusk – who spoke first after the release of the first exit polls for the presidential runoff in Poland. The polls give him a slight lead, with 50.3% of the vote against 49.7% for his sovereignist opponent Karol Nawrocki.

‘I will be the president who unites all Poles,’ said Trzaskowski, stressing, however, that it will be necessary to wait for the official results before drawing any definitive conclusions. This call for caution is motivated by the narrow margin between the two contenders.

The tone was quite different for Karol Nawrocki, 42, an independent candidate supported by the Pis, who instead claimed victory: ‘You will see that tonight we will win and save Poland,’ he said. He then added: ‘We will not allow Donald Tusk to monopolise the country’s institutions.’

The neck-and-neck race reported by exit polls leaves every scenario open, pending the complete count.
