Despite an appeals court ban, Trump continues to expel prisoners and hand them over to Bukele’s authoritarian regime. A propaganda video shows the violence inflicted on the expellees

Despite the suspension of the expulsions of Venezuelans ordered by the US Court of Appeals under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, the Trump administration has sent 17 more prisoners to El Salvador, entrusting them to dictator Nayib Bukele. In a Hollywood-style video, Bukele showed the arrival of the prisoners on a US military plane. The men, escorted by masked soldiers, were humiliated, forced to kneel, forcibly shaved and locked up.

The action openly defies the judiciary, ignoring the rights of the detainees and handing them over to a regime that has already shown contempt for human rights. This umpteenth violation raises concerns about the authoritarian drift of the United States and its support for repressive governments like Bukele’s.

This behaviour marks a further step towards the delegitimisation of the US justice system, with the Trump administration continuing to ride roughshod over the law in the name of an aggressive and inhumane foreign policy.
