Istanbul authorities ban political rallies after mayor’s arrest

The mayor and main opponent of Erdogan, Ekrem Imamoglu, was arrested today. Ban on demonstrations and public readings until 23 March against the arrest

The authorities in Istanbul have decided to ban political demonstrations and public readings of press releases until 23 March, a measure that comes after the arrest of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.

Imamoglu, a member of the main opposition Chp party and considered President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s main political rival, was arrested on charges of corruption and aiding and abetting the PKK terrorist organisation.

The mayor, who had already announced his candidacy for the 2028 presidential elections, is currently under investigation for various offences. The decision to ban demonstrations appears to be a response to the political tensions and growing protests following this arrest.
