The Palestinian organisation has confirmed the release of soldier Edan Alexander and the handover of the bodies of four deceased hostages. Meanwhile, negotiations with Israel on a new exchange agreement continue

Hamas announced the forthcoming release of Israeli-American soldier Edan Alexander, a prisoner since October 2023, and the handing over of the bodies of four hostages with dual US citizenship who died while in captivity. However, the names of the dead hostages have not yet been disclosed.

Edan Alexander was serving near the Gaza Strip when, on the morning of 7 October 2023, he was captured by Hamas forces during an escalation of conflict in the region. Alexander’s release comes at a sensitive time, with US mediators busy negotiating a second phase of a ceasefire and prisoner exchange between Hamas and Israel.

Hamas confirmed that it had responded positively to a new offer received yesterday from American mediators to facilitate the exchange of Palestinian prisoners and the release of hostages. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu branded Hamas’ actions as “psychological warfare”, stressing that the organisation has shown no signs of backing down in the ongoing negotiations. ‘Hamas has not moved an inch,’ Netanyahu said in a note, accusing the organisation of conducting “psychological manipulations”.

The negotiations are taking place in Doha, with US envoy Steve Witkoff working to find an agreement between the parties. Israel has accepted the framework proposed by the US, but significant differences remain with Hamas, which continues to maintain its position in the negotiations.

While the situation remains tense, the release of Edan Alexander could be an important step towards resolving some of the most pressing humanitarian issues, despite the political complexities involved.
