Violent wave of bad weather causes serious disruption: 65 million Americans on weather alert, flights cancelled in Germany and blackouts in Britain
Hundreds of flights cancelled in Germany, a record cold spell and unprecedented snowfall in the last ten years in parts of the United States, with 65 million Americans on alert. In the UK, thousands of homes were left without electricity due to the heavy snowfall. These are the effects of the powerful winter storm that is paralysing air, road and rail traffic in several parts of the world.
In Germany, Frankfurt Airport, the country’s busiest airport, has cancelled 120 flights, according to a spokesman for the airport confirmed to Dpa. Reduced visibility and the need to clear the runways of snow are the main problems that are causing delays and cancellations. Stuttgart Airport in south-west Germany also experienced flight delays and cancellations. Deutsche Bahn, the German rail service, warned that there will also be disruptions in rail transport.
In the US, a severe winter storm swept through several areas of the country. A polar vortex has brought exceptional snowfall and extremely cold temperatures, with some states such as Kansas, Arkansas, Kentucky and Virginia declaring states of emergency. Snowfall could reach up to 35.6 centimetres in some areas, while southern states such as Mississippi and Florida have issued severe cold and icing warnings. The National Weather Service has also warned of the possibility of tornadoes and hail in some areas.
Yesterday, temperatures dropped dramatically in many US cities: -7 °C to -10 °C in Chicago, -18 °C in Minneapolis, and even -25 °C in International Falls, Minnesota, on the Canadian border. The cold wave is expected to intensify in the coming hours, especially along the east coast of the US, with temperatures dropping as much as 25 degrees below the seasonal average, according to the NBC.
In the UK, the winter storm caused considerable disruption. Leeds Bradford Airport in Yorkshire has closed its runway due to the heavy snowfall, with no indication when it will be reopened. Some flights to Manchester airport were diverted to other cities such as Dublin and Paris. British energy operators reported power outages affecting over a thousand homes in England and Wales.
Despite difficult weather conditions, the Premier League match between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield stadium was confirmed, despite security concerns.
In Ireland, the orange alert for snow and ice is still in effect, with further snowfall expected in the coming days. The Irish Meteorological Service predicts accumulations of up to ten centimetres of snow in some areas of the country.
