Ukrainian Offensive in the Kursk Region: Clashes and Losses

Nuova offensiva ucraina nella regione di Kursk: pesanti scontri e perdite. Zelensky denuncia l’uso di droni Shahed con componenti esteri e chiede più sanzioni

Ukrainian forces have launched a new offensive against Russian troops in the Kursk region, as announced by Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidency office, on Telegram: ‘Kursk region, good news, Russia will get what it deserves’. The target of the offensive appears to be the road to Kursk, northeast of the town of Sudzha, captured by the Ukrainians in recent months. This action follows the surprise attack launched on 6 August.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defence Ministry reported that it repelled two Ukrainian counter-offensives in the Kursk region in the last 24 hours, claiming that Ukrainian forces lost up to 340 soldiers and four tanks. Moscow also claims to have shot down a Ukrainian missile in the border area and destroyed numerous Ukrainian combat vehicles and equipment.

Zelensky denounces the use of foreign-made Shahed drones

Overnight, Ukraine was attacked by 103 Shahed drones, containing thousands of foreign-made components, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky stressed the need for stricter enforcement of the sanctions imposed on Russia, pointing out that Moscow continues to illegally source sanctioned materials from around the world. He then thanked international partners for their support, calling for a strengthening of sanctions, air defence systems and military support to defend Ukraine from Russian attacks.

Russian territorial conquest in 2024

According to the Institute of War Studies and Ukrainian sources, Russia conquered almost 3,600 square kilometres of Ukrainian territory in 2024, with the heaviest territorial losses recorded in November. According to the data, Russian forces advanced by about 4,000 square kilometres in the past year, a sign of the difficulties faced by Ukraine on the eastern front.
