Transport chaos in northern India: dense fog blocks flights and trains in New Delhi
Dense fog causes transport disruptions: flights and trains blocked in northern India. Visibility has dropped to zero, according to the Indian Meteorological Department
Extremely dense fog has enveloped northern India, causing major disruptions in the transport sector. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) described the situation as ‘zero visibility’, directly affecting flights and trains in the region. More than a hundred flights departing from New Delhi International Airport were delayed, while dozens of trains were delayed or rescheduled due to the lack of visibility, the Indian news agency PTI reported.
The IMD reported that dense fog will persist over the next few days, particularly impacting nine airports, including New Delhi airport, where visibility dropped to zero in the early morning hours. The capital’s airport, which handles about 1,300 flights a day, warned passengers of possible inconvenience, especially for flights that do not have the advanced radar system that allows landings in very low visibility conditions.
In addition to fog-related problems, New Delhi’s air quality has been classified as ‘very poor’, aggravated by high humidity, which reached 100% this morning.
