Tomiko Itooka, world’s oldest person, dies at 116 in Japan
Brazilian Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas inherits the longevity record according to the Guinness Book of Records and the Gerontology Research Group
Tomiko Itooka, considered the oldest person in the world, died in Japan at the age of 116 years and 220 days. Born in Osaka on 23 May 1908, Itooka passed away in the nursing home where she resided, in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture. The Guinness Book of World Records and the Gerontology Research Group have confirmed that the title of world doyenne now passes to Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas, a 116-year-old Brazilian nun born 16 days after Itooka.
Tomiko Itooka had inherited the title last August, after the death of Maria Branyas Morera in Spain who was 117 years and 168 days old.
