Hamas OK in principle on draft ceasefire agreement and hostage release

According to sources who asked not to be quoted, Hamas has given the go-ahead to the draft agreement that includes a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, after intensive negotiations with Israel and international mediators

Hamas has informed mediating countries that it has approved a draft agreement that includes, among other measures, the start of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages. The news was reported by the Qatari daily Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, which quoted a source close to the negotiations, who stressed that the organisation had held meetings and discussions with officials from Qatar, Egypt, Turkey and other Palestinian factions before reaching this decision. Hamas also confirmed that the negotiations with Israel had reached the ‘final stages’ and that the leaders of the Palestinian factions were satisfied with the progress.

For its part, an Israeli official told CNN that Israel is ready for a ceasefire, saying that all necessary compromises have been reached and that the ball is now in Hamas’ court. Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari added that the negotiations are now in the ‘final stages’ and that the main obstacles have been overcome, although he advised caution about enthusiasm, pointing out that the details are still being discussed. Qatar, along with Egypt and the United States, is one of the main mediators in these negotiations.
