Israeli Defense Minister confirms Israel’s responsibility in Haniyeh’s killing and promises decisive action against Houthi rebels in Yemen

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has officially confirmed for the first time Israel’s responsibility in the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas political leader who was killed in Tehran during last summer. Katz, in a statement reported by Haaretz newspaper, said Israel has “beheaded” several leaders of terrorist groups and intends to do the same with Houthi leaders in Yemen. This confirmation marks an important moment for Israeli foreign policy, which has focused on dismantling the leadership of Hamas, Hezbollah and other groups considered hostile.

The confrontation with Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran.

Katz emphasized Israel’s military successes against enemy forces, stating, “We defeated Hamas, triumphed over Hezbollah, blinded Iranian defense systems and hit the Assad regime hard in Syria.” This comment reflects Israel’s approach to combating Iranian influence in the Middle East. Iran, a Houthi ally, remains a priority target for Israel, which has already conducted numerous military operations directed at limiting the country’s war capabilities.

New Houthi attack and Israel’s response.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have continued their attacks against Israel. Recently, they claimed drone strikes against the Israeli cities of Ashkelon and Tel Aviv. According to the Times of Israel, a drone was shot down by the Israeli Air Force before reaching the country’s airspace. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also reported that it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen, activating warning sirens in several central areas of Israel, including the West Bank and Negev.

Netanyahu’s order: destroy Houthi infrastructure

Following the rocket attacks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the armed forces to eliminate Houthi infrastructure in Yemen. Netanyahu reiterated that “anyone who attempts to harm Israel will be hit with full force.” This announcement confirms the Israeli government’s commitment to defend the country against threats from Yemen, which is considered a strategic outpost for Iran.

U.S. involvement

The U.S. Central Command (Centcom) announced on X that its forces are planning attacks against Houthi targets in Yemen. Already during the previous week, the United States carried out precision bombing raids on a missile depot and command center in the Yemeni capital. The Pentagon said these strikes are aimed at disrupting Houthi operations, including their attacks on U.S. military and commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
