Drone Attack at Ali Al Salem Base Destroys Italian Task Force Air Drone

An unmanned aircraft struck the Ali Al Salem base in Kuwait, destroying an Italian Task Force Air drone stored inside a shelter. Italian personnel were not harmed

A drone attack at Ali Al Salem base in Kuwait struck a facility hosting U.S. and Italian military personnel on Sunday, March 15, destroying an Italian unmanned aircraft assigned to the mission.

According to Italian defense authorities, the unmanned aircraft hit a shelter inside the base where a drone belonging to the Italian Task Force Air was stored. The aircraft was completely destroyed in the drone attack at Ali Al Salem base, though no personnel were injured.

The incident was confirmed by Luciano Portolano in a statement released on X by the Italian Defense General Staff. Portolano said he immediately contacted Colonel Mangini to verify the condition of the Italian personnel stationed at the base.

“At the time of the attack all Italian personnel were safe and were not involved,” Portolano said. He added that he promptly informed Guido Crosetto and that he remains in constant contact with the minister to monitor the situation of Italian contingents deployed abroad.

The Italian Defense General Staff also explained that in recent days the operational footprint of the Italian Task Force Air had already been reduced as a precaution, following developments in the regional security environment. The personnel still stationed at the base are currently focused only on essential mission activities.

The drone destroyed in the drone attack at Ali Al Salem base represented a significant operational asset for the mission. It had remained deployed at the installation to ensure the continuity of ongoing operations.

Italian authorities said the situation continues to be closely monitored by the Chief of Defense Staff and by the Italian Joint Operations Command, which maintains constant contact with deployed contingents.

Speaking on the television program “Diario della domenica” on Rete 4, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said the attack would not affect ongoing missions.

“We will not be intimidated by a drone. Our missions continue. It’s not that a drone arrives and we abandon our positions,” Tajani said.
