Coldplay criticised at Wembley for greeting Charlie Kirk’s family

Chris Martin invites everyone to “send love to everyone”, but the audience boos

During Coldplay’s concert at Wembley Stadium, Chris Martin surprised the audience with a message that divided fans. Before performing the 2005 song “Fix You”, the frontman invited those present to raise their arms and “send love” to the family of Charlie Kirk, the US conservative activist who was shot dead on the campus of Utah Valley University.

‘You can send it to Charlie Kirk’s family, you can send it to anyone’s family, even people you disagree with, but send them love anyway,’ Martin said, adding a thought for ‘the peaceful people in the Middle East, Ukraine, Russia, Azerbaijan, Sudan and Somalia’. The speech was accompanied by fireworks on stage.

Online reactions and controversy
Part of the audience responded to the words with boos, and criticism of the band poured in on social media. Many spectators at Wembley expressed disapproval of the reference to Kirk, founder of the conservative movement Turning Point USA, considering the greeting inappropriate at a time of high political tension.
