William and Kate move to Forest Lodge

Their new home in Windsor marks a “modern” turning point for the British monarchy

London – The Prince and Princess of Wales are preparing to move to Forest Lodge, an elegant red-brick residence dating back to 1780 with eight bedrooms, located in the heart of Windsor Great Park. From the top floor of the house, which offers views of Windsor Castle, William and Kate will live with their children in a more intimate setting, far from the grand royal palaces.

The decision to break with tradition

Unlike their predecessors, the Waleses will not live at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle, but intend to build a more “normal” family life. The idea, according to sources close to the couple, is also to reduce the size of the monarchy: with William as king, the active members of the royal family could be reduced to five or six, less than half the number during the reign of Elizabeth II.

The future of the princes

The eldest son, George, the future heir, is expected to take up his royal duties after a period in the Armed Forces. The fate of Charlotte and Louis is still uncertain, with their parents inclined to give them the freedom to choose whether or not to take on a public role.

Fewer staff and lower costs

Today, the Wales employ about 68 people, half the staff Charles had as prince. The reduction in commitments and staff could also be reflected in the costs of the monarchy, a sensitive issue in view of the review of the Sovereign Grant scheduled for 2027.
