New York health authorities link the outbreak to cooling towers
A Legionella outbreak has hit Central Harlem, New York, with five deaths and over a hundred people infected. The city’s Department of Health explained that the source of the outbreak was identified in some cooling towers in the area, which tested positive for the bacteria.
As of August 18, there were 108 confirmed cases, with 14 patients still being treated in hospital. The authorities have reiterated that the disease is not transmitted through direct contact between individuals, but through the inhalation of contaminated water particles, which can cause acute pneumonia, especially in elderly people or those with compromised immune systems.
The suspected facilities have already been treated and secured. The authorities have also specified that there are no risks associated with the normal domestic water supply.
