With 360 votes against, 175 in favour and 18 abstentions, the House confirms its confidence in the President of the European Commission
The European Parliament has rejected the motion of no confidence against Ursula von der Leyen. The initiative, supported by far-right groups and Eurosceptic conservatives, did not obtain the necessary consensus: 360 MEPs voted against, 175 in favour and 18 abstained.
The motion was motivated by a series of allegations, including alleged non-transparent behaviour in managing relations with pharmaceutical companies during the pandemic and alleged political interference in some member states. Despite this, Parliament confirmed its confidence in the current President of the European Commission.
Von der Leyen, who is running for a second term, defended her actions, calling the accusations made by the promoters of the no-confidence motion unfounded. The vote strengthens her position ahead of the upcoming European elections and confirms the support of the main parliamentary groups, in particular the European People’s Party.
The result puts an end to a period of internal political tension within the Union, confirming the continuity of European leadership at a time of great international instability.
