Israeli PM comments on incident with diplomats in Jenin, accuses France, UK and Canada and announces new Shin Bet chief

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke in a lengthy video released by his office after his telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump. The focus of the confrontation was the war in the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) are engaged in military operations against Hamas. According to reports from the PM’s staff, Trump reiterated his ‘support for the objectives’ of the Israeli government: the release of hostages, the elimination of Hamas, and the implementation of the so-called ‘Trump Plan’.

Jenin, strikes against diplomats: ‘An accident’
Netanyahu played down the incident that saw Israeli soldiers open fire on a diplomatic delegation in Jenin, speaking of an ‘incident that can happen in war’ and pointing out that ‘no one was injured’. He reiterated that the Israeli army ‘does not target civilians or diplomats, but terrorists. Exactly the opposite of Hamas’.

Verbal attack on Macron, Carney and Starmer
In the video, the PM harshly criticised the leaders of France, Canada and the UK, accusing them of supporting the creation of a Palestinian state as a ‘reward for murderers and rapists’. ‘You are on the wrong side of justice, humanity and history,’ Netanyahu said, addressing Emmanuel Macron, Mark Carney and Keir Starmer directly.

Shin Bet top appointment, challenge to the judiciary
The PM also announced the appointment of General David Zini as the new head of the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal intelligence service. The decision comes as Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara had asked for a wait-and-see approach, pointing out the conflict of interest linked to the ongoing investigations into the PM’s associates. The Supreme Court had already ruled that the removal of the current head Ronen Bar had been ‘improper’.
