US president announces end to attacks after Yemeni rebels capitulate. Ironic repartee with Canadian PM Carney on the 51st state hypothesis

Donald Trump has announced an end to the US bombing of the Houthis, declaring that the Yemeni rebels ‘have capitulated’. The US president spoke from the Oval Office, during a press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, after the Israeli raid that hit Sana’a airport. ‘We will honour this announcement and cease the bombing. They have capitulated,’ Trump said.

During the meeting, Trump also revived his provocative proposal on the annexation of Canada to the United States: ‘I still believe it should be the 51st state, but it takes two to tango,’ he said, smiling alongside Carney. ‘It would be a beautiful marriage,’ he added. The Canadian premier’s response was not long in coming: ‘Canada is not for sale and never will be.

The US president then confirmed that he would not withdraw tariffs on Canadian products. When asked about this, he replied with a clear ‘no’, adding only: ‘That’s just the way it is’. Despite the firm tone on the trade front, Trump expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Carney and the Canadian people: ‘Canada is a special place for me,’ he said, emphasising that the biggest concession possible will be ‘friendship’.
