Incorporation of the SpaceX site as an autonomous municipality approved with 97% of the vote

Overcome the regulatory limits imposed by the State of Texas and accelerate the race to Mars. It is with this aim that Starbase, the new city wanted by Elon Musk around the SpaceX launch site near Brownsville, South Texas, was officially born. 97% of the 218 voters called to vote were in favour of incorporation, a predictable outcome given the strong presence of residents with ties to the company.

Starbase, now a municipality in its own right, has for years been home to one of the strategic complexes for the development of the Starship, the 120-metre-plus rocket designed to take man to Mars. According to the Wall Street Journal, the area has already attracted thousands of workers and engineers from other SpaceX locations, helping to transform the Rio Grande Valley into a crucial technology centre.

The implications of incorporation are manifold. Once the referendum results are certified, Starbase will be able to operate like any other Texas city: it will be able to pass zoning regulations, collect taxes, manage services, and hire staff. However, municipal management will initially focus on budgeting, as pointed out by Alan Bojorquez, an expert in Texas municipal law.

The leadership of the new city is already firmly in the hands of SpaceX: Bobby Peden, the company’s vice-president, has been elected mayor. A situation that raises legal questions regarding conflict of interest, since the Texas code imposes limits on public officials with economic ties to private companies.

The project is not without its critics. Some residents and environmental activists fear for the impact of space activities on the territory: the launches cause strong vibrations, disturb the local fauna and could lead to the temporary closure of public beaches. A hypothesis contested by the county authorities, despite the fact that a state bill is already under consideration that would allow Starbase to restrict access to coastal areas on launch days.

Meanwhile, the city presents itself as a futuristic urban laboratory, projected into space. ‘Becoming a city will help us build the best possible community for those working on humanity’s future in space,’ reads the official city profile. Between interplanetary ambitions and legislative challenges, Starbase is destined to become not only a launching point, but also a testing ground for the future of space colonies.
