Von der Leyen: ‘Russia still aggressor, strong ceasefire measures needed’

After the attack in Sumy, EU Commission president relaunches hard line against Moscow and reiterates support for Ukraine

‘This morning Russian cruelty struck again, killing men, women and children in the city of Sumy’. With these words Ursula von der Leyen commented on social media on the attack that claimed more than 30 lives in the Ukrainian city, just as the population had gathered to celebrate Palm Sunday.

‘A barbaric attack,’ she wrote, calling for strong measures to impose a ceasefire. Von der Leyen called the escalation a ‘sad reminder’: ‘Russia was and still is the aggressor, in blatant violation of international law’. He then reiterated that Europe would keep up the pressure on Moscow until ‘a just and lasting peace, on Ukraine’s terms, is achieved’.

‘Today’s victims, their families and all Ukrainians are in our hearts. Today and every day. Europe stands by Ukraine and President Zelensky,’ he concluded.
