Myanmar, ceasefire already violated: clashes between army and rebels in quake-hit areas
Despite the ceasefire announced until 22 April, military junta forces conducted operations in the Sagaing region. The earthquake toll rises to over 3,000 dead
The ceasefire announced by the ruling military junta in Myanmar has not held. In the last few hours, in fact, there have been new clashes between loyalist forces and rebel groups, even in areas already devastated by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that hit the country hard last Friday.
According to local witnesses, the army conducted operations in the Sagaing region during the night, violating the three-week truce proclaimed yesterday to facilitate relief efforts. Meanwhile, the official quake toll continues to rise: 3,003 dead and over 4,500 injured.
