EU and NATO do not trust Putin: they demand concrete facts from Russia to stop war in Ukraine
Diplomatic pressure on Moscow to show concrete commitments towards an end to the conflict. Mark Rutte warns: ‘An attack on a Nato country will have devastating consequences’. Intensive contacts between Russia and the US, but doubts remain about Putin’s intentions
The demand for concrete facts to stop the war in Ukraine has become central in the discussions between the EU, NATO and Russia. While in Riyadh there is progress in the negotiations under the direction of the United States, strong ambiguities remain about Moscow’s real intentions, despite ‘intensive’ contacts with Washington.
Anitta Hipper, EU spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, stated that ‘Russia must now show real political will to end its illegal and unprovoked war of aggression’, stressing that Moscow will be judged by its actions and not by its words.
For his part, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reiterated that an attack on any NATO country would have devastating consequences, sending a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin: ‘The reaction would be devastating’.
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stressed the need to hold Russia accountable for crimes committed in Ukraine during the three-year war, including the abduction of Ukrainian children.
Moscow, through its spokesman Dmitry Peskov, said it was satisfied with the constructive dialogue with the US, even though tensions and mutual accusations between Russia and Ukraine remain on the ground.
Despite diplomatic talks, Moscow’s conditions for a truce in the Black Sea and the reactivation of trade agreements are considered drastic, and Trump himself has admitted that Russia could prolong the conflict.
