Bird flu: two New York cats infected with the H5 virus
Two New York cats have tested positive for H5 bird flu, both fed raw food by Savage Cat Food. Health authorities urge owners to take precautions and contact their veterinarian if they experience symptoms
The New York City Department of Health confirmed that two cats, belonging to two families with no contact between them, tested positive for the H5 avian influenza virus. Authorities, working with animal health experts, are investigating how the felines became infected.
Michelle Morse, acting commissioner of the department, said the current risk to the public is low, but reminded pet owners of some basic precautions, such as avoiding feeding raw food or milk. Raw pet food, produced by Savage Cat Food, is at the centre of the investigation, as it could be linked to both cases.
Deborah Bayazit, a veterinarian in New York, had to put down a cat that had consumed raw chicken produced by Savage Cat Food and had severe symptoms related to bird flu. The company has issued a voluntary recall of its products and is working with the FDA on further investigations.
