Israel continues diplomatic efforts to free more hostages from Hamas
Israeli negotiators in Egypt hold talks with senior Egyptian officials to seek a new agreement with Hamas. The aim is to free more hostages and extend the ceasefire
Israeli negotiators are currently in Egypt for talks with senior Egyptian officials in an attempt to reach an agreement with Hamas for the release of more hostages. According to the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, these negotiations are part of a broader mediation effort to reach a lasting truce in the region.
Return from Doha and obstacles
The negotiators returned last Friday from Doha, the Qatari capital, where attempts to extend the ceasefire with Hamas ended without results. The main objective was to obtain the release of additional hostages in exchange for a break in the fighting, but the discussions did not produce the hoped-for agreement.
US proposal
Israel supports a proposal put forward by the US special envoy, Steve Witkoff. The plan calls for the release of half of the hostages at the beginning of a prolonged ceasefire, which should last at least until Easter. If a final agreement to end the conflict in Gaza is reached during the ceasefire period, the release of all hostages would be guaranteed.
Possible developments
While negotiations continue, it remains to be seen whether it will be possible to achieve an extended ceasefire and secure the release of all hostages. The situation remains critical, with the international community continuing to press for a peaceful resolution of the conflict and the release of people who have been held hostage for months.
