US President Donald Trump attacks the European Union as ‘abusive’ and threatens heavy tariffs on European alcohol products in response to a 50% tariff on whisky. US-EU trade tensions continue to rise

Donald Trump has issued new threats of tariffs against the European Union, calling it ‘one of the most hostile and abusive tax and tariff authorities in the world’ and accusing it of taking advantage of the US. In a post on X, the US president reacted harshly to Brussels’ announcement of a 50 per cent tariff on American whisky, stating that if it is not removed immediately, the US will impose a 200 per cent duty on all wine, champagne and alcohol products from the EU. ‘This will be great for American businesses that produce wine and champagne,’ he added.

Trump then used social Truth to reiterate his positions on international trade, stating that the US does not have free trade, but ‘stupid trade’ and that ‘the whole world is screwing us over’.

Tensions between the US and the EU have worsened further since 12 March, when the US started applying a 25% tariff on steel and aluminium, while Europe announced countermeasures. Trump criticised the EU for its treatment of US companies, citing the case of the $16 billion penalty imposed on Apple by the European Commission, calling it unfair. The president declared that the US will no longer accept being treated unfairly and will win this financial battle with the EU.
