Despite 30-day ceasefire proposals agreed between Ukraine and the US, Vladimir Putin continues to pursue his military objectives, showing he has no intention of stopping

Moscow’s response to the ceasefire plan reached between Ukraine and the US is yet to come, but Vladimir Putin has made it clear that he is not interested in any pause in hostilities at the moment. Indeed, the Russian president has ordered the Army General Staff to ‘completely liberate’ the Russian region of Kursk, which is partially occupied by Ukrainian troops.

These words, uttered during a visit to the frontline troops, are an indirect response to the proposed 30-day ceasefire. Putin, addressing Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, said: ‘I expect that all combat missions of our units will be completed and that the territory of the Kursk region will soon be completely liberated from the enemy.’

Images broadcast on Russian television show Putin, sitting in camouflage clothing, listening to Gerasimov’s account of the military operations. Kremlin spokesman Peskov confirmed that the president visited one of the Kursk group’s troop command points, in a clear signal of support for the military operations.

Despite international mediation attempts, the Russian leader seems determined to pursue a military victory, ignoring the human casualties and the growing number of Ukrainian civilian victims. The recapture of several villages in the Russian region of Kursk, occupied by Ukrainian forces since the August incursion, demonstrates Putin’s willingness to continue his war campaign without any concessions.

The situation, therefore, remains dramatic, with little hope of a near peace, and the Kremlin’s strategy is confirmed as a threat to the stability of the region, leaving room for an increasingly bloody and devastating conflict.
