Elections in a climate of uncertainty, with the economy and the fight against corruption at the centre of the campaign

Polls opened this morning at 7am in Kosovo for the parliamentary elections, with the ‘Vetevendosje’ (Self-Determination, VV) party of outgoing Prime Minister Albin Kurti given as the favourite. However, polls indicate that the nationalist leftist formation might get a lower percentage than the 50.2 per cent recorded in the previous elections in 2021.

The opposition is represented by three main centre-right and right-wing forces: the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) and a coalition led by the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK). The election campaign was dominated by economic issues and the fight against corruption, while the issue of dialogue with Serbia remained in the background.

For the Serbian minority, which has about 100,000 inhabitants out of a population of almost 2 million, the main party is Srpska Lista (SL), close to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. The formation’s goal is to confirm control over the ten seats reserved for Serbs in the 120-member parliament, 20 of which are earmarked for minorities.

The more than 2 million voters, including 105,000 abroad, will be able to choose from 1,280 candidates from 28 parties, coalitions and civic lists. For the first time, 100,000 young people will also vote. The consultation is being monitored by around 100 EU observers, with polling stations closing at 7pm.
