Tensions in New Zealand: representatives of more than 80 Maori tribes call for the British sovereign to intervene to defend their rights under the Treaty of Waitangi

At a time of rising political tensions, representatives of over 80 Maori tribes have appealed to King Charles III to intervene in New Zealand politics to defend the rights of the Aboriginal people. The National Iwi Chairs Forum, a collective of tribal leaders, sent an open letter to the British ruler, expressing concerns about the New Zealand government’s violations of the Treaty of Waitangi. The document, signed in 1840 between Maori chiefs and the British Crown, is the foundation of relations between the Aboriginal people and the government.

Violations of the Treaty of Waitangi

According to Maori leaders, the policies of New Zealand’s current right-wing coalition government are eroding their rights and threatening the integrity of the treaty. Aperahama Edwards, chairman of the Ngati Wai tribe and member of the National Iwi Chairs Forum, said that after 184 years of trying to cooperate with the government, their concerns remain unheeded. The letter signed by more than 500 people, including tribal leaders and representatives of Maori organisations, hopes to get the attention of King Charles III, in the hope that he will intervene in defence of the agreements made with the Crown.

Criticism of government policies

New Zealand government policies aim to eliminate what is called a ‘race-based’ approach in public policy. Proposed measures include the abolition of the use of the Maori language in public services, the closure of an institution aimed at reducing health inequalities and a radical reform of the Treaty of Waitangi. These changes have triggered strong opposition from Maori, who fear growing anti-Maori rhetoric and a progressive weakening of their relationship with the Crown.
